September President’s Letter
Welcome Transition Specialists -
It’s already September and for me this month is a transition from Summer to Fall where anything is possible from 100+ degree heat to comfy 60 lows. Not unlike the transition we as letter artists can take for granted moving from word to word or line to line, but some pieces demand particular attention and a wildly drastic, possibly intentional transition to make a word stand out to grab the reader’s attention! You control how the reader views and to a large part interprets what you are saying. Use that to your advantage.
Kaligrafos will be at the Dallas Pen show. Last year was a huge success so, we’re doing it again. We need volunteers to the staff the table both Friday and Saturday to talk up the guild, share your knowledge and of course, recruiting for the guild. We are lucky; I guess my rambling and demo’s with Rick didn’t scare them off last year so they’ve asked us to give a one hour talk/demo/presentation again. That will be on Saturday but not sure of the time yet. Come out and support your guild! It is fountain pen centric but fountain pen ink works wonderfully for dip pens (I have several bottles) and the array of colors is endless. You can find folks selling vintage ink wells and some nibs as well. The dates are Sept 23-24. Please see Eric for volunteer opportunities.
Speaking of Eric, our Membership Chairman, he’ll have our name tags and directories to pass out.
And if September wasn’t already hoping we have Kathy Milici coming in for a 2 day workshop on the 17-18th. I’m not sure if there are any spots still available but feel free to reach out to Sherry, our Workshop Chairman.
Looking just over the horizon we have our annual bazaar only 2 months away, so if you haven’t already started gathering your things or creating your items, now is as good a time as any. There are also the “minis” that we’re trying out this year for a more focused and personal learning opportunity. The next one is “intro to dip pens” with none other than me as your “instructor” on Oct 22 at my place. Future topics slated will be Copperplate, folded pen, and italic. See Sherry for more information and to sign up.
Lastly don’t forget to bring your envelopes for Show and Share or any other pieces you would like to present or get feedback on.
Keep your pen close and your ink closer as you never know when something might need a good writing upon!

Definition of a Volunteer.....
A person who expresses a willingness to undertake a service and use their time and talents for charitable, educational, or other worthwhile activities, especially in one’s community for the benefit of other people as a social responsibility rather than for any financial reward.
Kaligrafos is a community; all of us collectively become Kaligrafos and give it life. Without us there is no Kaligrafos and without volunteers and Chairman there might not be a newsletter, or any exhibits, or workshops. A single person cannot run Kaligrafos nor can 5 people; it takes teams and leaders combined to give the community the programs every month and workshops with instructors from across the country, not to mention the directories and name tags we get every year. If we don’t have enough volunteers then things will have to be re-evaluated.
All of us contributing make Kaligrafos the what it is today. Let’s make it better for tomorrow. If your not sure what is needed but you want to help, seek out myself or any of the current Chairman.
Don’t wait to be asked, volunteer!
