September President's Letter

August was an incredible highlight for Kaligrafos. The exhibit at the Irving Arts Center was a huge success. We cannot thank Bonnie Hoffman enough for the job she has done in organizing not only this exhibit, but also the Manske Library exhibit and the Skillman Library this past year. Comments overheard at the exhibit revealed that we have opened the eyes of many to the world of calligraphic ART. We broke out of the "certificate" mold and hope to find many new venues in future. Practically speaking, it is time to start creating art for the next exhibit.

I hope that you were inspired in some way by the reports from the Odyssey Calligraphy conference. I have put the pdf as a link at the bottom of the President's Letter page so you can go back and look at your leisure. I like to look at another's pieces and ask myself what I like about them and why as a method of training my own eye. Pick a few techniques that you'd like to explore and pull out your art supplies. If you are having trouble locating your supplies, hang on until October. Louise Weber will be helping us get our studios organized.

After browsing through the Odyssey report, you may be inspired to create your own alphabet. Perfect! Angie Vangalis will be leading us through that very subject at the September meeting. As long as the letters are legible, the sky is the limit as far as creativity. Any pen, any tool, anything can make marks. Keep your eyes open as you go about your days activities to find new objects, colors, and designs that you can incorporate into your personal alphabet. Come prepared to be launched on your way. Angie is incredibly talented in both calligraphy and the teaching skills so don't miss her program.

If you missed the August meeting, we are still holding a spot for your help in the next year. Please let Margaret Mall know which month that you'd like to assist in providing refreshments, set-up, and sign-in book art. She has organized a fabulous year, but we need your help to make it an inviting and inspiring group of artists. Do your part and create and share your letters of the month as well as any additional art that you have created. Until then...
